Destruction and demolition, the post-destruction status, the relationship between destruction and development is the theme of my series of works.

Three years ago, I witnessed a house about 30 years in our neighborhood was demolished in one day. A year after, a bigger house was built at the same spot. It looks like a simple economic event, actually this is a very complicated social problem. This phenomenon is now everywhere around us in the city we live in.

 

As the immigration makes the growth of our urban population, the fast-growing population enlarges housing needs. The hot housing market makes developers build more new houses for sales, as a result, the housing price keeps rising. Expansion of housing brings great economic benefits. However, a few years after, the houses would be oversupplied and the new houses are surplus; while the market is still booming with more and more brand new houses built to replace old houses. The city  development is a prosperous scene!

 

However, what behind the prosperous scene are a lot of problems caused by the over development for us to think about. A lot of valued, not old houses, well designed and maintained, were forced to be demolished for building new houses driven by the huge economic value. These are serious problems harmful to the entire society, though our government has tried to use enforcement to make adjustment on them. Reasonable demolition is necessary for social development and progress, but if we overemphasize the interests of the lack of social responsibility, which will bring a lot of negative effects to the entire society. It’s your choice to demolish your old house and build up a new one, but to destroy a young quality house and rebuild a brand new just for a larger value of interest, it is a waste but not development. I brought this serious problem to the public for consideration and discussion.

 

Basically, my project is to design an artwork by using abandoned building material to accomplish the artwork. The visual theme of the artwork is building material on which artists will finish their paintings. And the artists are aiming to bring a direct visual effects to audience just the way it looks like - a piece of artwork was created on an abandoned building material. The second part of my project is a video clips work, which covers the process of how a house was demolished. The collage and painting works and video works combined into a theme of the work. The art form of  theme is an exploratory. When the works are displayed, the static works of art and the dynamic images will be effectively combined. The nature of static and dynamic is coherent,complete, and indispensable to each other. The new art form is worth exploring, and it will create a new form of visual art through the delivery of social issues to the public and for people to review their current behavior.

 

We live in the city. In the long run, ecology, environment protection, energy saving are very important issues. If we continue our crazy behavior on unreasonable house demolishing, it may also violate the laws of science. A lot of waste of our resources, might cause the future of our ecology change. Then, it’s hard to imagine what difficult environment our future generations will live in? This is a primary purpose I would like to reflect in my work.
